In the latest Google Maps update, Google is bringing the ability to create lists of places and share them with family, friends, and colleagues. The update makes the navigation app a little more social, in line with trends that put collaboration and sharing at the forefront of the user experience.
The ability to create lists of places was first introduced on a small scale last year, with only Local Guides above a certain level being able to use it initially. Starting today, all Google Maps users – on Android and iOS – will be able to save locations to lists. Think lists of the best eateries in town; the best spots for fishing; the coolest clubs; or, why not, 100 places to see before you die. You’re not limited to physical places, as you can add places that are not marked on the map by dropping a pin. You can use one of the pre-defined list (Favorites and Want To Go) or you can make your own.
Once you create a list, it’s easy to share it friends or even make it public so anyone can peruse it. Of course, you can always keep your finds to yourself if you’re so inclined. Saved lists will be available from the side menu, in the Your Places section. Once you open a list, you can easily share it with anyone via a custom link that you can send over your favorite social or messaging app.

Google Maps is already a polished and feature-rich navigation app, but Google seems keen to make it smarter and more collaborative – expect more features like shareable lists in the coming months. The update will be rolling out in the next hours and days, but you can hit the Play Store button below to check for the update right now.

Uber integration and new UI improvements
January 12: Google has brought full Uber integration to Maps on Android, allowing you to book, complete and pay for an Uber ride directly within the app. There’s also a new interface in Maps that shows the types of ride options you have in a particular location.
Tons of new voice commands
September 29: A ton of new voice commands are now available within Google Maps on Android, allowing you to mute, show route overview, avoid tolls, and much more, all while using your voice. A full list of the new voice commands can be found here.
Speed limit signs
September 14: While this feature may not be live for everyone, Google Maps has started showing speed limit signs on certain roads. These signs appear as small, unobtrusive notifications on the bottom-left of the navigation display.
